Alright Now follows Joanne (Cobie Smulders) a rock musician who drunkenly enrolls in college after she breaks up with her boyfriend and her band falls apart. Convinced she will give the youngsters a run for their money, Joanne is shocked to discover that no one knows who she is and they could care less about her rock star past. Joanne Sykes is lead singer of once popular 90’s indie rock band The Filthy Dukes. They’ve been on the road since 1996, slowly but surely managing to play 150-capped venues. We find the Dukes at their last ever gig, and as the band falls apart so does Joanne; she’s finds out her boyfriend is cheating on her with just about everyone, and there’s little left for her once the group disband. So, thinking about the next step, she drunkenly applies for university. University isn’t quite what Joanne expected – far less wild partying, and a lot more yoga and kale. Whilst there, she falls in love with a librarian called Pete. It’s far from smooth sailing, but will going back to university be the new start she needs; who knows, maybe she’ll re-discover her love for music.
Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) is on raucous and funny form in this British comedy, playing Joanne, lead singer of once-popular 1990s Britpop band The Filthy Dukes. After a drunken night out with her friend Sara (Jessica Hynes), Joanne finds she mistakenly enrolled in university. Determined to give the young students a run for their money as a party animal, she finds they aren’t interested in rock ’n’ roll. However, love and new beginnings might be on the cards for rocker Joanne.
